Disappointment

This weekend I should have been basking in the Italian sun and whizzing at high speed along a sea front road with three other people all on bicycles that are older than me. This plan was ruined by a simple message on a web site:

Now, I don’t understand Italian, but a quick bit of internet translation reveals that the event has been cancelled owing to devastating storms in the area causing chaos and wreaking havoc.

The plan was to take four “Carpenter” bikes, all manufactured before 1947, all fixed wheel and all recently renovated by my neighbour Peter, down to a village near Pisa to compete in a four up time trail. Our aims were simple, turn up, get round and try very hard not to come last. The last bit was probably a bit hopeful but a stretch goal is always good.

The preparation had been relentless. The bikes had to be prepared, the entry requirements had to be complied with, medical certificates had to be obtained, race licences had to be negotiated, the logistics of getting four people and four bikes to the same place at the same time had to be planned. We even went out on the bikes a couple of times.

On Monday the prospect of a weekend in Italy doing something immensely silly was fast becoming a reality. On Tuesday the message appeared and after a number of mails to the organisers our fears were confirmed. It had all been in vain. Wednesday to Friday was spent cancelling hotels, negotiating refunds and unpicking the mess.

All is not lost, it may be possible to transfer our entry to next year.
